The final task for the Commercial Games Development module was for the whole year group to form a cohort and develop an online multiplayer social deduction game, like Among Us or Town of Salem. The final product had to be a WebGl game.

In Confidence is an online multiplayer social deduction game where players must identify all members of their gang by confiding with others. There is also a snitch who wants to find 1 member of each gang so you need to be careful who you confide with. To get confides players must complete tasks. The first team to have all members know who is in their group wins.

Each group in the cohort was given an IP owned by Play West. The group I was in, Team Six Pack, received the Autarky IP. Each group would have to create a map, juice, tasks, and anything else their map needed, however, they couldn't stray away from the core game loop and mechanics.

The cohort of just over 40 students was divided into groups of 6 or 7 and 1 group of 2. Each group had a producer, gameplay rep, and technical rep. I took the producer role for my group. The producers would have to meet regularly to feedback progress, decide which direction to take the game, discuss issues, make decisions and lead the production of the game. Producers would also lead most weekly updates to the whole cohort and take charge in directing what their groups did.

For context, game juice is the intangible, tactile sensation experienced when interacting with video games.

Team Six Pack was responsible for the following:

  • Networking System
  • Autarky level
  • Developing Juice elements
  • Assisting with sorting assets
  • Bug fixing
  • Assisting with game design
  • Assisting with testing the game loop in Minecraft
  • WebGL Testing
  • Unit Testing
  • Assisted with the animator
  • Assisted with eight directional input

My roles:

  • Producer for Team Six Pack
  • Producing the Autarky IP Level Trailer
  • Developing networking unit tests
  • Assisting with Minecraft testing
  • Planning and Developing the Autarky Map
  • Alpha stage WebGL builds
  • Ripping sprites from the Autarky IP
  • Creating a temporary task system
  • WebGL testing
  • Security Cameras
  • Buckets of Paint
  • Other Juice elements
